28.A Girl´s Love to Her Father Mrs. G. sat in the room where her husband lay very ill. He was not a Catholic and, although he had never interfered with her practice of religion, he seemed to take no interest in such matters. The doctor opened and Blanche, their only child, entered the room. It had been her first day in school and she had many wonderful things to tell Daddy. After a few minutes Mrs. G. said, “I think Daddy will be very tired if you talk so much. You had better go out and play.” “But, Mother, Daddy must teach me my lesson for tomorrow.” Her father smiled and said, “Stay, and show me what this wonderful lesson is.” Blanche produced her catechism and was soon repeating the answer after her father. In the midst of the lesson the puppy came bounding into the room, and out into the garden ran the dog and child for a merry chase. When the little one had gone. Mr. G. continued reading the little book with much thought. One day Blanche brought home a Sacred Heart badge which her teacher had given her. “Daddy, will you let me pin this on your pillow, for Sister said that it would help to make you well?” “I shall be glad to accept anything that will cure me,” her father replied. So Blanche pinned the little badge on the pillow, and from that moment, he began to improve. One day, Mrs. G. came into the room and found her husband intently reading the catechism. She made no remark but murmured a fervent prayer to the Sacred Heart that her husband would become convinced of the truth of what he was studying. She sat near the window in silence, but after a few minutes Mr. G. said, “Mary I would like to have a talk with a priest. There are some things in that catechism which I would like to hear explained.” Mrs. G., with a thankful heart, went to the telephone and asked the pastor to call. After a number of visits from the priest, Mr. G. expressed the wish to be baptized. He received the sacrament with great fervor. His health continued to improve and he was soon able to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, where he rendered a fervent thanksgiving to the Heart of Jesus for his spiritual and bodily cure. Blanche was very happy, for her father told her that he owed all his graces to his little daughter who had given him the badge and had taught him the way that led to the Heart of Christ. |
