17.Trust God

When James Brown married a non-Catholic, he did not realize that lack of union in the basic sphere of religion might be a source of tension between his wife and himself.   It had not occurred to him that their two children might be deprived of Baptism.   When this happened, however, he became so unhappy that by the time his son Paul was twelve years old, James had left home and had gone to work in a distant city.

Paul Brown was taken to the hospital, very ill.   An operation on a mastoid terminated in spinal meningitis.   A telegram was sent to his father, requesting him to return.

The nurse in charge was Catholic and spoke to the boy of the necessity of receiving Baptism and also told him about the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who loved children so well. She gave the child a badge, which he studied carefully.   He seemed to be improving when another complication set in – a clot of blood had formed in the jugular vein and the doctors said that the only chance of life lay in another critical operation, with a very slight probability of recovery.

When Paul heard that he was to be operated on again, he asked for the priest to baptize him.   The chaplain was called and after the sacrament was administered, the boy, clasping the Sacred Heart badge in his left hand, was taken to the operating room.

Meanwhile the parents were inconsolable.   The mother was frantic with grief.   A Sister of Mercy, who was visiting the hospital, spoke to her and told her to place her confidence in God, and the Heart of Christ would hear the prayer.   “How can I pray? I am not a Catholic.”   “God always listens to prayer and we shall join with you in pleading for the life of your child,” replied the Sister.

All was in readiness and, before the anesthetic was given, the chief surgeon called the doctors assembled to watch the operation to come near and examine the place on which he was about to operate.   To their amazement, the clot had entirely disappeared.   With one accord, they pronounced it miraculous. Paul laughed and  whispered to the nurse,  “They do not know our secret.”   “What is that?” asked the physician.   The boy opened his hand and showed the badge, saying,  “The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the best doctor.”

When Mrs. Brown realized what had happened, she exclaimed,  “As soon as possible my little girl and I will be baptized.”  The father humbly added,  “We have all failed, but now we shall be united in the Heart of Jesus.”
