22.Trust in Sacred Heart of Jesus

The class had been dismissed and the teacher of the third grade had seated herself at her desk again, when a tap came at the door and one of her pupils entered.

“Sister, I forgot my books, may I please get them?”   “Certainly,”  replied the teacher, as she continued to correct the papers upon which she was working.   After the books had been found,  Irene came to the desk and said,  “Sister, I just love that prayer you taught us this morning and I have kept saying it every little while.”  “Which prayer, dear?”   “Sacred Heart of Jesus,  I place my trust in You!”   “It is a beautiful prayer and I hope you will never forget it, for if you trust the Heart of Jesus, he will keep you from all harm.”  “I am sure He will keep me from danger, for I say it lots of times.”

A few days later, on her return from school, Irene ran, while crossing the street, in front of a streetcar and, as there was traffic coming and going in all directions, she could not reach either sidewalk in safety.   Quickly breathing the aspiration,  “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You!” she was caught up on the fender of the car and carried along for some distance.  When the terrified driver was able to control the brakes and stop the car, she was found to be uninjured.  A crowd assembled and, when asked if she was hurt, she simply said, “Of course not!  I said  ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You!’ and He took care of me.”

When Irene reached home and related what had happened to her mother,  Mrs. S., pale and trembling at the thought of the awful fate her daughter had escaped, fervently said,  “I thank God that I have sent my child to a Catholic school where she has learned to place her trust in the Heart of Jesus!”
